Bounty Hunter Pioneer EX Review

The Bounty Hunter Pioneer EX is a low-priced metal detector targeted at the beginner. Users report it to have good performance despite its deceivingly low price. It has the necessary controls for sensitivity and discrimination without all the complicated bells and whistles that might confuse first-time treasure hunters.

It is a great machine to learn the basics of metal detecting at the same time works reasonably well at finding coins and relics. It even works on wet sand which is difficult to achieve for other models at this same price level.

Being a starter model, the Pioneer EX does have its quirks. Many users report that accurate Pinpointing takes practice and many may find themselves having difficulty digging up and locating detected target objects without a dedicated probe.

The discrimination feature works very well against iron, but other junk items like aluminum pull-tabs and foil can be difficult to filter out.

Pros:

  • Good price/performance ratio
  • Works decent even in wet sand
  • Excellent choice for beginners
  • Has critical discrimination and sensitivity controls

Cons:

  • Pinpointing feature needs getting used to
  • Discrimination still picks up pull-tabs and foil
  • No headphone jack
